The NYCFE is pleased to participate in Fraud Awareness Week!

This year, we have a panel discussion on Elder Financial Exploitation: Solutions and Support.

While we may not know the true extent and impact of elder financial exploitation, we know that it has become widespread in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and yet, research suggests that only 1 in 44 cases of financial exploitation get reported to an entity that can help. Older adults make tempting targets to perpetrators who are skilled in exploiting their perceived or real vulnerabilities. Many professionals already know the red flags of elder financial exploitation, but don’t know how to intervene and where to turn for support. What resources to share with older adults to prevent exploitation? Who can adequately assess and identify the extent of the exploitation? How do we hold the perpetrators accountable? What trends are being observed given our aging population and increasingly technological landscape? This panel will discuss tangible solutions and support for older adults experiencing elder financial exploitation and the professionals who serve them.

Session Objectives:

  • Share current prevalence and trends in elder financial exploitation.
  • Describe forensic accountants and Adult Protective Services’ strategies for assessing and investigating elder financial exploitation.
  • Describe the process for prosecuting perpetrators of elder financial exploitation and methods of holding perpetrators accountable.
  • Share tools and strategies for preventing and detecting elder financial exploitation

This session will be moderated by Dora Gomez, NYCFE President.

We welcome our panelists:

Gili Hershkovich-Kim, Regional Manager, NYC HRA Adult Protective Services —identification and assessment of financial exploitation
Brad Hasenauer, Senior Accountant, Webber CPA—investigation of financial exploitation
Liz Loewy, Co-Founder, COO, EverSafe—prevention and prosecution of financial exploitation
Gary Brown, Statewide Elder Abuse Coordinator & Assistant Attorney General-in-Charge, NYS Office of the Attorney General—scams and fraud dynamics and resources
