Turning Financial Data into Evidence: NMDOJ Investigations
This presentation offers a practical, behind the scenes look at how the New Mexico Department of Justice investigates financial cases and transforms raw data into prosecutable criminal cases. Through real world case studies, NMDOJ will demonstrate how forensic accounting techniques, data analysis, and visualization tools are used to identify fraudulent activity, connect data sources, and clearly communicate findings to investigators, prosecutors, and the court. Attendees will gain insight into the NMDOJ investigative process and learn how analytical work is structured and documented to meet criminal standards of proof.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Understand the NMDOJ fraud investigation process from initial intake and data review through case development and criminal prosecution.
- Recognize how forensic accounting techniques and data visualization are used to connect financial and non-financial data into coherent evidentiary narratives.
- Learn best practices for presenting and documenting analytical findings to support criminal procedures, prosecutorial decision-making, and courtroom presentation.
