No Barrier to Entry: How LinkedIn's Unverified Employment Claims Fuel Impersonation Fraud

LinkedIn lets anyone claim they work anywhere. There's no verification barrier before that claim goes live—no proof of employment, no check against the company itself. That gap hands scammers instant credibility: a fake recruiter who lists a household-name employer borrows that company's trust the moment the profile publishes, with nothing to back it up. Drawing on real casework from The Profiler Protection Service, including 55,000+ fraudulent job posting takedowns, this session breaks down how that vulnerability gets exploited and how to close the gap on your end. The money and information stolen from US companies and job seekers fund continued fraud, and the platform isn't substantively addressing the problem.
Attendees will learn:
1. Why LinkedIn's employment field functions as a trust exploit rather than a verified credential, and how scammers use it to impersonate real companies.
- Example from a client of mine who is dealing with people impersonating her company right now.
2. How to spot the tells of a fabricated employment claim before extending trust to a recruiter, executive, or "colleague".
3. Practical OSINT methods for verifying whether someone works where they claim
4. A repeatable investigation framework (Identify, Investigate, Report, Track, Educate) for documenting company impersonation and pursuing platform takedowns
